'Le Basque’ is one of Marin Marais’s most lively and recognisable compositions, published in 1717 in his fourth book of pieces for the viola da gamba. The title of this fast-paced Baroque dance likely refers to Basque culture and the contemporary French expression ‘courir comme un Basque’ (‘to run like a Basque’). In contrast to much of Marais’s melancholic work, this piece is extremely cheerful, light-footed and rhythmically challenging.
In this arrangement, the solo part is played by violin, viola or cello, whilst the intermediate orchestra provides the accompaniment. A delightful piece to liven up any concert!
