ESTA CONFERENCE SWEDEN 27-30 september 2024
HELP MY STUDENTS ARE PRACTICING!
Everybody knows the phrase: ‘Oh, I would love this student to work a little harder at home!’. In a curriculum, student motivation can fluctuate considerably.
In our school, like in many other schools, the motivation of students is a permanent point of interest. This motivates us to take many actions: we discuss it in our teams, monitor grades, survey students and parents. But this does not explain everything.
The engine turns out to be what happens in the classroom. The stronger the lesson, the higher the motivation of the student, is ours point zero. And that’s quite a challenge!
In this workshop we want to share tips and tricks. What did we develop in our string lessons not only to keep motivation high, but also to improve the level? We are happy to share our experiences and ideas, and eagerly want to learn about yours!

LOOKING THROUGH A PRISM: WORKING WITH COMPETENCES
How do you look at a pupil, what’s your way of starting with a new piece? What educational goals do you pursue? How is your class organized? In Belgium, music schools work with curricula based on competences. A competence is defined in the pedagogical-didactic literature as an ability that includes knowledge, skills and attitudes. In doing so, we look at the evolution of the learner with the starting point being the uniqueness of each learner.
In this workshop we do not focus on theory, but we explore various applications on the classroom floor. How does this work in a stringlesson? What opportunities could this offer for your class? What does this mean for a student? What do I focus on, and what works best? Practical tools are shared.

THE STRINGFUN PROJECT: RESEARCH FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING
In this session, we would like to share with you the Stringfun project.
We composed and edited new music, we developed a method to improve our cooperation between string classes on the one hand, but also to improve the level of playing. We like to give you an insight into the process, and a look at the results.
Hoiw can we achieve that musical and technical development of a student go hand in hand.

PLAY IN: NEW MUSIC FROM FLEMISH COMPOSERS
The Stringfun project is a nonprofit initiative that conserves and shares new music for strings. With the revenue from sales, we give opportunities to young composers, stringteachers, etc. to write and edit their oeuvre. Very often arrangements, lovely pieces, etc. are made for certain events and could help out many other teachers.
We collected oeuvres for soloists, stringplayers and piano, stringensembles and orchestras.
In this session, we play together, we try new music, we try to inspire you by showing the projects we did until now.
